When Prashanthi met Georg and Ludger, longtime partners in free improvisation, the trio was excited about the possibilities of Rāga improv meeting live electronic music. A five‑hour jam session later – Shanthi (Peace) the band was born. The band premiered at the Night of Religions and Cultures in Pauluskirche Dortmund, Germany in June 2025.

With Shanthi, music becomes conversation. The three artists fuel off each others’ creative energy. These compositions have been performed live in five different shows in Germany, before the band decided to produce this into an album. This album was recorded live over a weekend at the No’Watt Studio in Mönchengladbach, Germany.

(EN) Prashanthi Sankaran ist eine in Südindien ausgebildete klassisch-indische Sängerin und lebt seit 15 Jahren in Deutschland. Für sie ist Musik eine interkulturelle Sprache, die Brücken baut, Rassismus überwindet und ein solidarisches Miteinander im humanistischen Sinne fördert.

Mit diesem kulturpolitischen Ansatz arbeiten Georg Sehrbrock und Ludger Schmidt bereits seit mehreren Jahren in vielfältigen Projekten zusammen. Über die NRW-Großformation The Dorf fanden die beiden Musiker erstmals zusammen, und seitdem gestalten sie unterschiedlichste musikalische Kooperationen. Shanthi and Friends ist eine dieser Formationen, die bewusst die Nacht der Religionen und Kulturen als Premierenort gewählt hat.

(DE) Prashanthi Sankaran is a classical Indian singer who trained in South India and has lived in Germany for 15 years. For her, music is an intercultural language that builds bridges, overcomes racism and promotes solidarity in a humanistic sense.

Georg Sehrbrock and Ludger Schmidt have been working together for several years on a variety of projects with this cultural-political approach. The two musicians first came together through the NRW large-scale formation The Dorf, and since then they have been involved in a wide variety of musical collaborations. Shanthi and Friends is one of these formations that deliberately chose the Night of Religions and Cultures as its premiere venue.
